Ask the Pro10 Ambassador Stylists: Hair Extension Care

Question: How do you keep up the Spanish Curl texture of Pro 10 hair extensions made with Ultima Protein Hair? Some people said to use mousse but others disagreed. Also what can i use at night?

Answer: O’kela Neveaux owner of Extended Beauty Salon and Boutique in Oak Park, Michigan: The best way to keep the Spanish curl pattern is to reset it before it begins to lose its natural pattern. Pro10 hair extensions can be set on rods or straws, and can be twisted or braided - or you can use a combination of two or more of those techniques together.

For night-time care: I always tell my clients that care is easy and any curl pattern will look better in the morning if they take a few minutes before they go to bed to refresh the extensions with water or a light styling product an then throw in a few rods, braids or twists under a satin bonnet to keep the curl pattern in tact.

Vote: Does Nicole’s Hair Look Better Long or Short?

Pro10 Ambassador Stylist O’kela Neveaux owner of Extended Beauty Salon and Boutique in Oak Park, Michigan, demonstrates how to do a stocking cap quick weave on Jasmine Nicole of Atlanta. O’kela used Yaki Straight Pro10 Hair Extensions made with Ultima Protein Hair, in two highlighted colors, 1B 30 and 1B 33. Imagine! No waiting to grow your hair out or change the color! No chemical processing either. Just a quick and easy way to get a new look.

Because Nicole’s own hair is so short, O’kela created a removable custom wig she can wear any time she wants a completely different look. Pro 10 is easy to care for too! It also is possible to tack the stocking cap to her hair for more long-term wear. Lots more photos on the No More Bad Hair Days Blog Flickr Group.

What do you think?: Do you like long hair or short on Nicole?

Dear Jamelia: There are alternatives to human hair extensions!

Pop star Jamelia recently got herself some media attention by dramatically declaring that she’d never wear hair extensions again because of the “very real human costs” of obtaining hair for human hair extensions. “How did I know I wasn’t wearing a dead person’s hair?” she roiled in the Daily Mail. She even starred in a BBC show called “Whose Hair is it Anyway?” featuring shifty looking human hair dealers who take hair from dead people.

Dear Jamelia: There are alternatives to human hair extensions! And one of the best alternatives is Pro 10 made with Ultima Natural Protein Hair. Made with natural collagen, Ultima hair looks, feels like and has the best qualities of human hair. You can curl, blow-dry, wash, brush, comb, style and restore Ultima hair without tangling, and it’s affordable too.

As several commenters noted in the Daily Mail article “…All this hand wringing nonsense.”

Rock on Jamelia. Just switch to Pro 10 so you can keep having hair extensions as your “confidence booster” that “transform me from busy mum of two into my alter ego, Jamelia the pop star.”

Laugh if you want, but Comfy Dog Conditioner is Great for Curly Hair

Ok, I know this sounds more than a little silly, but I used my dog Benny’s leave-in conditioner this morning on my own curly hair and it worked better than just about any other product - from the incredibly expensive to drugstore varieties - that I’ve ever tried.

That’s right! I used Comfy Dog leave in conditioner and if you have curly hair, you’re going to love me for telling you about it.

Most leave-in conditioners for curly hair either leave my hair too soft, are too heavy and weigh it down, or, worst of all, make my curls crunchy.

Comfy Dog, on the other hand, smells nice, leaves my hair (the the coat of Benny Bix Ochman Labradoodle Puppy) shiny, full, and with well-defined curls. When you read the ingredients list, you’ll see that, unlike a lot of hair products, it’s got no harsh chemicals. You’ve got to condition your natural hair while you have extensions, and this is a great product to try.

If you have a curly hair conditioner you love, please share the name with us. As you can see, I’ll try just about anything on my hair at least once.

Hair Extension Dos and Don’ts

Brazilian braidsA recent report speculates that supermodel Naomi Campbell’s receding hairline, was “possibly caused by years of wearing hair extensions.” It appears that Campbell chemically straightens and probably also colors her hair, a combination that can cause damage to anyone’s hair.

Can hair extensions damage your hair? Not if they’re correctly applied, maintained and removed, says famed extension stylist Adriana Barrett. (Ultimahair FAQs here.)

Here are Barrett’s Dos and Don’t of safe use of hair extensions:

o Have extensions applied and removed only by a professional stylist who is licensed, and also certified in the system being used.
o Avoid methods that require chemical adhesives, glues and tapes to apply extensions. Seek out a stylist who uses only organic sealants.
o Four-strand braids and keratin pre-tipped extensions are the safest methods of application. Brazilian braiding also is fine when skillfully done.
o Hair extensions should never hurt. Many “kitchen braiders” make extensions too tight.
o It is better to create many small extensions than fewer thick ones. Barrett says the amount of extension hair applied should be equal to the amount of hair to which it is attached. She uses as many as 150 tiny extensions on a full head. Adding too much extension hair to the natural hair will pull and stress the roots of the natural hair.
o Treat your hair gently and care for extensions carefully.
o Hair extensions must be replaced at least once every two months, and they should be removed by the professional who put them in.

Cathleen Rittereiser’s Pro10 Hair Extensions Before & After

with extensionsCathleen Rittereiser, Wall Street executive. by day, comedy legend by night, had Pro 10 Ambassador Stylist Miho remove her hair extensions after a month in which she went from pretty blonde to vah vah va boom glamour (left). Miho’s original method of applying the extensions requires no glue or extensive sewing. Cathleen was able to wash and style her hair the whole month she had them.

Cathleen’s own hairCathleen told me if was fun to try a different look, and to see people’s reactions to her sudden glamour look. “I’d definitely do it again for any number of reasons,” Cathleen said, like trying a new style, a special occasion, or wanting to get through the awkward stage of growing my hair out.

It was a little extra work to have extensions, she said, because long hair is harder to take care of than short. But it was worth the effort, and a lot of fun too, she said.

See other photos of Cathleen’s extensions in the No Bad Hair Days Blog’s Flickr Group. And while you’re there, join the group so you can upload your own before and after hair extension photos.

How to Make Tighter Curls in Hair Extensions

KimmieWant tighter curls on your Pro10 Hair Extensions made with Ultima? Kimmie Lemard, a Pro10 Ambassador Stylist, says:

“Although Pro10 always recommends a low heat setting of 266 degrees for curling, you can accomplish a much tighter curl by increasing the heat setting just a little bit up to 300 degrees. Remember to use a ceramic iron.”

Lemard is creative director, Signature Stylist and Educator at the NSeya Salon & Spa in Atlanta Georgia. Read more tips from Pro 10 Ambassador stylists here.
